Use of IP address

All computers and devices connected to the Internet have a unique number called an Internet Protocol (IP) address. Since these numbers are typically recorded in country-based blocks, IP addresses can be used to identify the country, province, and municipality from which the computer connects to the Internet. Web analytics tools collect the IP address of webwebsite visitors to inform webwebsite owners from which part of the world their visitors come. This method is known as IP geolocation.

Web analytics tools do not communicate the information of the real IP addresses to its Users. Additionally, using a method known as IP masking, webwebsite owners using Google Analytics can ask the tool to use only part of the IP address for geolocation purposes rather than the full IP address. Whether or not webwebsite owners use Web analytics tools, they have access to the IP addresses of visitors to their webwebsites.
